The Most Frost Tolerant Plants In Your Garden

December 1st, 2012

Don’t wait until after the last frost to plant these vegetables that prefer cooler weather. These plants can take a little frost – and should be planted a month or more before your area’s last average frost. While most vegetables may perform better when started indoors, radishes, turnips, and lettuce germinate and grow rapidly, and are simple to sow directly into the ground. When they are finished growing in the spring, it’s easy to grow warm loving vegetables in their place. Be sure to follow spacing recommendations, and place them in a full sun location during the coolest months.

Broccoli – This nutrient packed plant loves cool weather, and will tolerate a day or two of frost or freezing weather. Plant this vegetable approximately a month prior to your area’s average last frost date. We carry the Di Cicco Italian variety in our Veggin’ Out and The Producer seed kits.

Carrots – These beta-carotene rich vegetables taste sweeter in cooler weather, but can be enjoyed in the spring, summer, and fall. Adding mulch over the roots to keep the soil from freezing can add even more vitality during the winter months. The Scarlet Nantes Carrot, featured in Veggin’ Out and The Producer has a reputation for abundant production.

Chives – These perennial herbs are incredibly weather tolerant, and can be harvested in the spring as leaves appear. Our Purly Chives offer a mild onion flavor, and can found in the Uncle Herb’s Favorites seed kit.

Collards – These hardy greens love cold weather, and can even tolerate a hard freeze. They also fair well in the warmer months, though- keep them out of extremely hot weather.

Lettuce – Green leafy vegetables like lettuce do quite well in cool weather, but need some protection from freezing weather. When gardeners take the time to plant a few seeds every week, a crop can become available on a continuous basis. Red lettuce varieties, like our Red Saladbowl can add beautiful color to your garden.

Peas – These cool season vegetables grow well on a fence or teepee, and under direct sunlight.

Radish – These cool weather-loving vegetables can be harvested as quickly as a month after seeds are planted. You may want to grow these smaller vegetables in containers to save space in your garden.

Spinach – Spinach is loved by gardeners for its low maintenance and cold tolerance. These plants perform better in areas with mild winters, and thrive in the shade during the summer months.

Swiss Chard – Our Fordhook Giant Swiss Chard is one of the most cold tolerant varieties around. This pretty leafy green tastes great raw, sautéed, or added to your favorite soup.

A Fall Craft Idea For Kids

December 1st, 2012

Finding Fall Expedition

Looking for a fun craft idea that will get your kids outdoors and curious about nature? Discovering fall’s natural treasures may be just the activity for fall break, or after your family’s Thanksgiving meal. This year, zip up those coats, find some warm gloves, and invite your children out on a “finding fall expedition.” Kids will love exploring the backyard and garden, or going on further to find a vast collection of fall items found in nature. Re-purposing a cereal or snack box is also a clever way for kids to display their findings.

We love this activity because it works well for all age groups. Toddlers enjoy finding objects with encouragement and adult supervision, while older children can create their own box, and discover objects more independently.

What you need: A cereal or snack box, scissors, glue, construction paper, markers

How To Get Started:

Step 1: Carefully use scissors to cut the top half of a cereal or snack box. Secure the sides with tape.

Step 2: Use construction paper, markers and other craft tools to decorate the inside and sides of the box.

Step 3: Invite children out for a “finding fall expedition.” Allow kids to find a wide range of items including fall leaves, seeds, pods, twigs, acorns, pinecones, flowers and rocks.

Step 4: Allow children to display their findings by securing each object in the box with glue. Allow the box to dry for at least 30 minutes.

Extension idea: This activity works well for all seasons. Have kids find and compare their items found in the winter, spring and summer months.

All About the Hibiscus

December 1st, 2012

Hibiscus originates from China and it is a delicate flower with soft and mushy petals. From the Greek it name means marshmallow. Hibiscus is the state flower of Hawaii and every visitor there is embraced with a garland of the pretty flowers. Nowadays, the flower can be found all over the world and it is a popular flower for tropical weddings and summer weddings in North America and Europe too. Hibiscus comes in yellow, red, lavender, orange, bluish and close to black shades. It is also the national flower of Malaysia and South Korea. The symbolism of hibiscus is not surprising – the flower signifies happiness and peace. The legend of the flower tells the story of an extremely beautiful woman who was married to a man who was blind. A rich lord fell in love with her and kidnapped her. The woman remained faithful to her husband and the lord executed her. The people of the village buried her next to the house of her husband where the hibiscus flower grew surrounding her grave. The flower is a recurrent element in depictions of the goddess Kali. In the Pacific Ocean, women living on the islands, often wear the hibiscus behind their ears. The rich history and mythology of this flower makes it popular for growing in gardens all over the world. Growing hibiscus will guarantee you that your garden is one of a kind and everyone will envy you. Choosing it for a primary flower in your garden you need to make sure that you can provide all the necessary conditions for the flower to bloom beautifully. In nature hibiscus grows best between palm trees and in bushes. The hibiscus loves sunny spots, but it also needs shelter from the wind. Choose the right spot in your garden so the flowers can get enough sun exposure during the day. The soil has to be well-drained and fertilized (you can use chicken bones, manure or blood). Plant the flower in summer, autumn or spring and remember that they grow in bushes. Water the flowers while they are growing and be careful because the flowers will attract hummingbirds and butterflies which can damage the blooms. During winter cover the edges of the hibiscus. When the shrub starts getting larger it’s time to prune it – this will encourage the growth. These vibrant flowers make great bouquets and floral arrangements. Their tropical nature cannot be ignored. They vary not only in color, but also in shade and size. A bouquet of hibiscus flowers is extremely impressive – you can give it to your significant other and you will surely impress them. Mix the hibiscus with pink and lavender birds of paradise, coral heliconia or yellow hibiscus. Mixing various tropical flowers is a great idea for a wedding decoration too. The flower is a symbol of delicate beauty and gentility, which makes it extremely versatile. It can adorn a cocktail party, a summer wedding, a birthday party or an engagement party. The hibiscus can add a strong exotic touch to any wedding. For boutonnieres, corsages and even for the bridal bouquet, the hibiscus will definitely catch everyone’s attention. You can also pick the smaller sized flowers, called dwarf hybrids for creating beautiful garlands and floral ornaments. Hibiscus pairs with orchids in a beautiful way – place them in crystal vases and bowls and adorn the wedding tables.

The types of hibiscus include: white (a perennial flower, used in Indian medicine), pink (a flower in great demand and the emblem of Hawaii), red (the most popular type in the Pacific Ocean’s islands), blue (close to lavender in shade), purple (one of the prettiest types of hibiscus) and yellow (popular for weddings).
